ENERFIN in ELECTRON

Enerfín Sociedad Energía S.L.U. is a company with over 25 years of experience in the development, construction, and operation of renewable projects, primarily wind energy.

Specifically, wind assets have a lifespan of 20 to 25 years, and the oldest ones have control and communication systems designed many years ago. These systems are well-suited to support the demanding operation of renewable plants but apply cybersecurity standards that are currently insufficient due to the high sophistication reached by criminal organizations targeting electrical infrastructures via the internet.

In this context, Enerfín faces three main challenges:

  • The first is to modernize the security of its control systems at the lowest possible cost.
  • The cybersecurity system implemented must be sufficiently effective to protect the assets throughout their lifespan and comply with regulatory requirements that control authorities may impose on renewable electrical infrastructures in the future.
  • The company’s personnel must achieve a sufficient level of maturity in cybersecurity in industrial environments to implement and operate an advanced cybersecurity system for all its renewable assets.

To address these challenges, Enerfín took the step to participate in the ELECTRON project with the aim of:

  • Understanding the state of the art of cybersecurity systems applied to the electrical sector, specifically to renewable energy generation plants.
  • Contributing firsthand knowledge and experience as an operator of renewable plants in the design and testing of a cybersecurity system, ensuring that the resulting system is useful for addressing the identified problems.
  • Raising awareness and training its systems technicians and operators on industrial cybersecurity issues applied to renewable electrical substation environments.
  • Preparing the company to undertake a project to implement a cybersecurity system like the one developed in ELECTRON.

We can confirm that these objectives have been met and that they represent the main achievements for the company in the ELECTRON project
